"Getting Out of that Slump" Hope for the New Year

Yay! This is my first installment in the Insecure Writer's Support Group, and do I need it. It's great timing too, being that it's the first week of the year and goals need to be met. And I did make goals this year and have my resolutions all set and ready to go...at least in my head.

I haven't yet completed my writing/blogging/marketing schedule, and had planned to start on it yesterday. Instead of working on it yesterday, I went to see "Django Unchained" and ate a big bag of buttery popcorn. Not very productive, but it was a free day and, darn it, I wanted to get out of the house!

So, my new supporters, I could use your energy force and prayers to help me complete my schedule and follow through with it. Not having written anything since my response to the prompt on my last post, I'm getting that creatively depressed feeling again. Although there's no need, because I've got lots to write about.

But, without the schedule, I don't get to writing enough. I read, watch TV, work, go to church, deal with family, anything but write on my novel. Help!! Send your energy. Be in ceaseless prayer. Be my accountability partners. Keep me from sinking into that "Unresolved Resolutions 2013" category!

The last two years were good for resolutions. With your help, this year can be even better!

  1. You can do it! Sit down and start mapping it out.
And nothing wrong with going out to see Django - darn good movie!

  3. Nancy, I was just thinking the same thing-- I really need to schedule my time better so I'm more disciplined and productive. Are you on Facebook? If so, I am trying to start a 2013 Goals Support Group-- no strict structure, just a friendly place of accountability, support and encouragement. I want to party in December knowing I gave my goals my best shot.

    1. I love that idea, Julie. Yes I am on Facebook as "LaRonda Johnson". I'd love to be a part of that group and to party in December!

  4. Hey, intent to schedule definitely counts for something/ As you saw at my place, I don't consider the new year officially started until next week - so anything you accomplish this week is gravy. And look! You've already accomplished one thing by joining IWSG. :) Nice to meet you and welcome to the group.

    1. You've got something there, Nicki. I'll count this week as warm-up and by next week, I'll be all set. Thanks!

  5. I feel your pain. I once heard a successful author challenge us budding writers to give up TV and write. I took the challenge, and it made a difference in my writing life.

    1. Often times I don't watch much TV, unless I have a rare day off, then I might spend much of the day there. Most times, no more than 1 hour at night before bed. My preferred writing time is in afternoons, so after work I'm usually reading or on the net. I need to schedule when I'm on the net and when I'm writing, and challenge myself to write in the evenings.

  7. You sound like me a little bit. I can easily get distracted if I let myself (and it's easy to let myself). I understand about the need for a schedule and sticking to it.

The NaNo, of all things, taught me how to make time and keep it. Not because it had a word limit and deadline, although that helped, but because I was accountable and had people alongside all the way. May you find that here in the IWSG. :o)

    1. That sounds like me. Up to now, the only time a set writing schedule worked was when I took BART to work. 1.5 hours each way. But since I work in a different location, BART isn't feasible anymore. So, I've got to get this schedule working for me. I believe this group will help me keep my head in the right direction.

  8. Nancy getting out of a slump, and particularly a writing slump, is always a challenge. I send you tons of positive energy and well wishes for a speedy delivery out of your slump, and a productively successful new year.

  9. I think I get this way when my story is just not going right. You may need some time to recharge so you can hear the muse again. Best wishes for 2013.

    1. I think I need to learn to work a schedule. My slump is that I've never been able to use scheduled times of writing, only once when I took public transpo to work. But, this year will be different!

  10. Welcome to IWSG! Hope you find your zest for writing returning with a florish. I was worried I wouldn't be able to get back into things after the holidays but slowly it's slotting back in. Good luck and best wishes for 2013.

  11. Welcome to IWSG!!! You can do it! Everyone needs a day off for a fun buttery popcorn movie now and then. Just give yourself some grace and then pick up the pen/keyboard again. I'll keep you in my prayers. Blessings for 2013!

  14. Hey La Ronda. It looks like you're on the right track: surrounding yourself with a support group of other writers and being honest with yourself about the things you need to do and the challenges to achieve them. As for the rest, well, as they say, "Nothin' to do but do it!" I must admit though that I'm like the pot preaching to the kettle since I often face the same problem.... :)

    1. Yes, yes, Anthony. It's the sad story of our lot: the creative procrastinators of the easily distracted and self-proclaimed too-busy-to-do-anything-about-it. There's a slower start than I intended, but the momentum will build this year to be one of the greatest yet!

  15. I'm working on goal setting too. My struggle it to keep my goals realistic and attainable. I have a feeling you are going to do great this year and with the strong support from the writing community and loved ones around you, you can't go wrong. (:

    1. Thank you Elise! I do feel this will be a special, turning point year. It's just starting in a slump, me with abdominal pain that's slowing me down from cleaning and setting up my new year the way I want. But that's just the devil! My God and I are much stronger and there are no true worries!

  16. Is that schedule done yet?

I had a good year 2012 for meeting my goals in general, though a few didn't quite stretch in. And I'm looking forward to gettin' some sh$t done in 2013. :)

    1. Hi! Thanks for the nudge. No, it's still not finished. I had not felt well this past week and couldn't focus on the list. I believe I'm better and will get to it by tomorrow.

I'm glad you had a great year. And as I told Melissa, nobodies 100% successful all the time. But I am looking forward to achieving my goals as well.

  17. Hi, I am a new follower and this post just reminded me that I am not off to a great beginning for 2013. I forgot to write my IWSG post, AGAIN. I am sending you good thoughts and will add you to my prayers. I know that you will get your schedule written and then your writing will take off. I only wish I was one of the organized people. I wish, I could set a schedule and actually stick to it. I don't know what my writing goals will be for 2013, but I am determined to finally become a published author. I am finally attending the writer's workshop that has been on my list for three years (that I did not get around to). So, hopefully, I am off to a better start this year. Good luck and hang in there. It is nice to meet you.

    1. Hi Melissa! Thanks for following. :)

I'm glad you've completed the task of joining a writer's workshop. Often times it takes us much longer to reach our goals than intended. As long as we keep striving in that direction, I think that's what matters. I'm sure God doesn't expect us to always be successful, because then we'd think we did it on our own and put our reliance on him on the back burner.

I'm glad to have made another connection and will look up your blog.
